Favoritism

Favoritism has been defined by the Oxford Dictionary as the practice of giving unfair preferential treatment to one person or group at the expense of another.
Favoritism has been a problem since the dawn of time. In the first family, recorded in the biblical text, the accusation of favoritism created a rift between Cain and Abel, leading Cain to murder his brother.
Favoritism is a problem today. One group or another is treated unfairly and unjustly. Scripture teaches that we are to honor others above ourselves. When we do that, favoritism falls by the wayside.
The Bible commands us to treat all equally. Join us as we gain insights from James 2:1-4 on some examples of favoritism along with some dangers of it.

Real Religion

Religion . . . we’ve heard of it for years, but what does it really mean? What separates real religion from religion?
Real religion has a “real” impact upon the person. That person is not only intellectually engaged, their words and actions are reflective of their commitment to the religion they follow.
James 1:27 defines real religion as this, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
That person seeks to live their faith as evidenced by what they say and do. Join us as we seek to grow in our faith and service for the Savior.

A Look in the Mirror

Mirrors are incredibly handy! You can see if your hair is out of place or if you have something in your teeth before you stand up front and give your presentation.
Mirrors help us see around corners or even expand what we see.
And while mirrors are incredibly helpful, they can also be misleading and distorted. Mirrors lose their effectiveness if we see a problem but fail to address it.
The Bible is like a mirror. As we read it, we find how it reflects God’s teaching and how it reveals areas that need to be addressed.
Join us this coming Sunday as we look at James 1:22-25, discovering the importance of accurately assessing who we are so that we reflect God’s Word at work in our lives.

Quick to Listen, Slow to Speak

Communication takes work. It requires us to listen well, so we can respond well.
It demands that we weigh our words before speaking and then to temper our words so that they create understanding and not disagreement.
James 1:19 tells us to “be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger” (ESV).
Join with us as we gain insight on how to communicate well.

He’s Alive

As a culture we place a great deal of emphasis upon an eye witness in establishing the veracity of a claim. Is that not also one of the many valid approaches to determine if Jesus did indeed rise from the dead?
This Easter Sunday, we will look at the many witnesses who saw Jesus alive after His crucifixion. They saw a man who bore the marks of the nails in his hands and in His feet, even noting where He was pierced. This man, this Jesus, ate and drank, walked and talked.
At one point over 500 witnesses saw Him, verifying His resurrection.
Join with us as we look at the testimony of the witnesses.

Insights from a Donkey

Have you every wondered why Jesus chose to ride a donkey when he rode into Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday? Why didn’t He ride a war horse or some other more valiant animal?
Zechariah 9:9, an Old Testament of the Bible written around 520 B.C., contains a prediction that the coming King of Israel would ride into the city of Jerusalem on a donkey. But what other reasons could there be for Jesus to enter into the city in that manner?
On Palm Sunday, we turn our attention to Matthew 21:1-11, as we discover some insights from a donkey and why they are important to us even today.

God’s Gifts

God gives good gifts. He provides the gift of salvation, the gift of forgiveness, and gift of His presence just to name a few.
God’s gifts make us stronger in our faith, more secure in our future, and more settled in our convictions.
Even trials and tests are a blessing because they produce in us the strength to stand firm in our faith.
This coming Sunday, we will look at James 1:16-18, discovering how to identify when gift comes from God. Learn more

Accept Unconditionally

God said, “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God” (Romans 15:7 – NIV).

What does it mean to accept one another and how did Jesus accept us? Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

When we accept others, it doesn’t mean that we condone or agree with everything they do and say. We overlook differing tastes, differing interests as we stand united in our faith in Jesus.

Winning the Battle with Temptation

Temptations . . . we all struggle with them and often succumb to them, wishing later that we had chosen better.
Dealing with a temptation is like dealing with a dinosaur. If you want to win, get while it is small. Address the temptation while it is simply a thought that has not yet resulted in a direct action.
Winning the battle with temptation is possible.
We would like to invite you to join us this coming Sunday as we look into James 1:13-15, as we discover what God has to say about temptation.
We meet at 9:30 am. at 740 N. 129th Street along the West Dodge corridor in Omaha, Nebraska. If you are uncomfortable in attending in person, check out our Facebook page, SpiritOfFaithOmaha, or our YouTube channel. Come grow with us as we seek to share the joy of knowing Jesus Christ.

A Race with a Reward

Not all races come with a reward. For many races the primary reward is to be able to simply say that you “won!”
You beat out the competition.
The Bible describes this life as a race, but this “race” comes with a reward. In James 1:12, that reword is called “the crown of life.” It’s promised by God to be given to all “who love Him.”
But what exactly is that crown of life?
We would like to invite you to join us this coming Sunday as we look into James 1:12, discovering to what this crown refers along with how we receive the reward.
